Ricardo da Costa

Ricardo MF da Costa, PhD in Life Sciences (Biochemistry / Biology) by the University of Wales at Aberystwyth (UK). Ricardo has acquired most of his research experience in fields linked to the study of the plant cell wall, primarily with the aim of utilising lignocellulosic biomass resources for the production of economically relevant products. Since joining the R&D Group “Molecular Physical-Chemistry” in 2020, Ricardo has worked in various projects related to the study of phytochemicals. Currently, he is the Principal Investigator (PI) of the PineWALL project, which aims at linking pine cell wall composition and structure, to pinewood nematode resistance. Furthermore, he has also been working on the study of phytochemicals from endogenous maritime plants, with the aim of their valorisation as novel food ingredients and/or nutraceuticals. However, Ricardo is a versatile researcher, capable of working in diverse research areas, as is evidenced by his past involvement in projects aimed at novel enzyme discovery through metagenomic screening, and aimed at the discovery of biomarkers for early diagnosis of human pulmonary diseases.
